Wechiau: The Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC), led by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, visited Wechiau to express condolences and engage with stakeholders following the passing of youth leader Abu Tijani.
According to Ghana Web, the delegation included the Upper West Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, DCOI Justice Ayensu Bonsomtwe, and the Deputy Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, DO I Adams Issahaku. Their first stop was at the residence of the Paramount Chief of Wechiau and his traditional council before visiting the bereaved family.
On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Management Board, DCOP Yiribaare conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Paramount Chief, the bereaved family, and the people of Wechiau. He assured them that the ongoing investigation by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) would be fair, independent, and transparent to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Regional Commander urged residents to remain calm and support the investigative process, emphasizing the Ghana Police Service's commitment to accountability, professionalism, and the rule of law. He also assured the community that the reported destruction of private property after the incident would be investigated separately, with those responsible held accountable.
Speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief, Gurungu Naa Alhaji Osman Laribogu expressed gratitude to the Regional Security Council for their visit and praised the professionalism of the security services. He urged the youth and residents to maintain peace and cooperation with law enforcement to preserve their longstanding relationship.
The delegation then visited the bereaved family's residence, officially conveying condolences on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police. As a gesture of solidarity, they presented food items and a cash donation to support the family during the funeral period. Family head Alhaji Haruna Alhassan thanked the Inspector-General of Police, the Regional Security Council, and the security services for their compassion and support, expressing confidence in the ongoing investigation.
The Regional Security Council also inspected a vandalized private property following the incident. DCOP Yiribaare assured the property owner that the matter would receive necessary attention and those responsible would be brought to justice.
Before leaving Wechiau, the delegation interacted with security personnel deployed to the area, commending them for their professionalism and reminding them to continue their duties with restraint, respect for human rights, and effective community engagement.
The visit concluded peacefully, reinforcing the Ghana Police Service and the Regional Security Council's commitment to transparency, accountability, and constructive community engagement. It also strengthened dialogue between the security services, traditional authorities, and the people of Wechiau, reaffirming their shared commitment to peace, security, and public confidence.
