Ejura: The Ejura Divisional Council has officially launched the 2026 edition of the Ejura Sekyerene Yam Festival. The launch was held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, by the festival's Planning Committee, unveiling a week-long line-up of activities aimed at promoting unity, culture, sanitation, and development in Ejura and across Asanteman.
According to Ghana Web, the Chairman of the Planning Committee and Kontihene of Ejura, Nana Odiasempa Obugyen Antwi, announced the dates for this year's celebration. He stated that the festival will be held under the theme: "Sekyerene: Celebrating Ejura's Rich Yam Heritage, Advancing Agricultural Innovation, Agribusiness and Sustainable Community Development." The festival is set to commence on October 16, 2026, and will climax on October 24, 2026.
Nana Obugyen Antwi outlined that the festival will begin on Friday, October 16, with special prayers at the Ejura Central Mosque involving the Muslim community. The following day will focus on a clean-up exercise across the town. On Sunday, October 18, the Christian community will hold prayers to mark the third day of the festival.
The fourth day, Monday, will see the Queen Mother of Ejura, Nana Akua Tiwaa II, visiting the Ejura Market Square to inspect trading activities and provide support to traders. On Tuesday, Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II will lead a health walk before addressing the community, with indoor games set to entertain participants.
Wednesday has been designated as Youth Day, showcasing talents through outdoor games and competitions. Thursday will highlight Ejura's cultural diversity, with ethnic groups presenting their heritage. Fetish priests will perform at the Ejura Palace, followed by a student quiz competition.
Later on Thursday, traditional rites will be performed with newly harvested yam by Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II in the Stool Room. On Friday, October 23, further traditional rites and rituals will be conducted in the community.
The festival will conclude on Saturday, October 24, with a grand durbar where Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II will receive homage from the people of Ejura. The Planning Committee anticipates the festival will attract high-profile personalities, including senior government officials, political leaders from the Presidency, dignitaries from the Ashanti Region, and guests from other parts of the country, with the Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong expected to attend.
