Accra: Rare footage of legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong's 1956 visit to Achimota College has emerged, showing the global icon sharing words of encouragement and life lessons with students during his historic tour of the Gold Coast.
According to Ghana Web, in the video shared via X, Armstrong is captured speaking to students about his journey to becoming one of the world's greatest trumpeters, highlighting the role of hard work, mentorship, and perseverance in achieving success.
Responding to a student who asked how he became a renowned musician, Armstrong recalled his humble beginnings in New Orleans, where fellow musician Joe Oliver mentored him and provided free lessons when he could not afford formal training.
The jazz legend said the support he received shaped his belief in helping others, stressing that success is often built through determination, continuous practice, and the generosity of those who provide guidance along the way.
He encouraged the Achimota students to remain committed to developing their talents, advising them that excellence requires consistent effort and dedication.
Armstrong also praised the musical abilities of young African musicians he encountered during his visit, expressing admiration for the quality and tone of the trumpet players he heard.
As part of his support for emerging talents, he announced that the most outstanding music student at Achimota College would receive a trumpet.
He asked the school authorities to identify the best-performing young musician and submit the name to his manager, who would arrange for the instrument to be sent to the student.
Armstrong's visit to the Gold Coast in 1956 formed part of his landmark African tour, during which he performed for audiences and engaged with communities across the continent.
