Asawase: The Asokore-Mampong Municipal Assembly commenced the demolition of a notorious slum at New Zongo, also known as Sabon Zongo, in Asawase on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The operation was conducted in broad daylight under the supervision of a joint force of heavily armed military and police personnel who secured key access points to prevent interference from residents and onlookers.
According to Ghana News Agency, the demolition team, equipped with heavy machinery, closely monitored the area as various structures were dismantled. The primary focus was on wooden structures, which had been identified as hubs for unlawful and criminal activities. The slum had gained notoriety for being a center of criminal activities, including narcotic drug dealing, a hideout for armed robbers and car snatchers, and other illicit acts.
The slum was also linked to environmental and health hazards, such as tyre burning that resulted in thick smoke, reducing visibility on nearby roads and posing risks to the health of local residents and traders. A recent incident that highlighted the severity of the issues in the area was the murder of a 27-year-old man, Yusuf Zakari, which escalated tensions within the community.
Yusuf Zakari was reportedly attacked and killed by a group of individuals known for smoking marijuana in and around the slum. Eyewitnesses recounted that the attack took place near the usual congregation points of the suspected group, spreading fear among the residents. It was alleged that the deceased had been accused of stealing Ghs 4,800.00 from one of the gang members, a claim that neighbors cited as a frequent catalyst for violence in the area.
In response to the escalating criminal activities and to restore order, the Assembly and security agencies deemed the demolition necessary. The action aimed to deter further unlawful activities and bring stability to the Sabon Zongo community. However, the demolition elicited mixed reactions among residents, with some advocating for enhanced policing and social interventions, such as employment support and youth engagement initiatives, to prevent similar situations in adjacent communities.
Authorities from the assembly assured Ghana News Agency of their commitment to completely dismantle all structures to ensure the safety and security of the area.
