Accra: Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has shared an update on embattled Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, widely known as OK Frimpong, who was arrested in the Netherlands.
According to Ghana Web, the minister's update, delivered during an engagement on July 27, 2026, indicated that OK Frimpong was still in the custody of security authorities in the Netherlands, refuting social media reports that the MP had already been extradited to the United States. He asserted that Ghanaian diplomats are working with the embattled MP's lawyers and family to ensure he receives all the legal assistance needed to fight his extradition.
OK Frimpong, who was detained on May 10, 2026, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam by Dutch immigration authorities under a United States extradition order, is at the center of an investigation involving the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Following his detention, a mission in The Hague has taken up the matter and is offering consular assistance to the Member of Parliament. They are coordinating with his family and his legal representatives, as well as relevant Dutch authorities, to ensure that he is treated in accordance with internationally recognised standards and that his rights are not violated.
The lawmaker's arrest is connected to an investigation over financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected romance scams involving an estimated amount of US$32 million. Sources familiar with the matter have disclosed these allegations, highlighting the ongoing nature of the investigation.
