Accra: Mr Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Tongu, has appealed to the government for the release of funds to complete the Agordomi Water Supply Project, aiming to enhance access to safe drinking water in the Volta Region. The MP's call for action came during a working visit to the project site, where he evaluated the progress and received updates from engineers and project managers on the current status of the facility.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Agordomi Water Supply Project, undertaken by Lesico, aims to deliver potable water to various communities including Sogakope, Keta, and Aflao. The project is intended to boost water security and support socio-economic development in these areas. Mr Lukutor highlighted the project's significance as a crucial public infrastructure investment and emphasized the importance of its timely completion to meet the increasing water demands from residents and businesses.
The MP noted that the construction had been stalled for approximately three years due to funding issues, with the government owing the contractor around £63 million. An additional £12 million is required to acquire essential equipment for the project's first phase. He projected that if the necessary funds are secured, the project could be completed within six months.
In an official media post, Mr Lukutor praised the contractors for their progress despite the financial constraints and pledged his commitment to engaging with relevant state bodies to facilitate fund release. He mentioned that he had already initiated discussions with Ministers responsible for Works, Housing and Water Resources, and Finance to expedite the settlement of outstanding payments.
Mr Lukutor stated that completing the project would significantly improve access to potable water, enhance public health, and stimulate economic growth in South Tongu and surrounding districts. He remained optimistic that the necessary steps would be taken to ensure the project's successful completion for the community's benefit.
