Accra: The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced the destoolment of Nana Kwabena Nsiah Ababio, the long-serving chief of Kenyase Number Two, after breaches of Asante customs were identified.
According to Ghana News Agency, Nana Nsiah Ababio, also known as Aban, who led the Kenyase Number Two community in the Ahafo Region for an impressive 89 years, was removed from his position during a meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council held at the Manhyia Palace. The council convened on July 17, 2026, to address the chief's violations.
Before the destoolment, Otumfuo Osei Tutu addressed the council, highlighting the chief's persistent engagement in activities that were not in line with traditional practices. The Asantehene emphasized that despite repeated warnings, the chief continued to act against the customs.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu questioned the chief's authority in creating the position of Hyiawohene in Kenyase, which had no basis in their customs. He reminded Nana Nsiah Ababio of his original role as a courtier and his subsequent rise to chieftaincy, which was now being undermined by his actions.
The Asantehene noted that even the land on which Nana Nsiah Ababio resided was under the jurisdiction of the Kenyasehene. He expressed disappointment at the chief's disregard for traditional counsel and stated that violations of Asante traditions would not be tolerated.
The customary rites of destoolment were immediately carried out, which included the removal of the chief's traditional footwear and the ceremonial slaughter of a ram to formalize the decision.
In a significant move, nearly all of the chief's kingmakers were also destooled for breaching their traditional oaths. However, the Asantehene spared the Kontihene and reinstated the reinstated Akyeame and other linguists to the council. Additionally, Nana Akua Tinkwamaa, the community's queen who had been previously destooled by Nana Nsiah Ababio, was reinstated by Otumfuo Osei Tutu.
The Asantehene concluded by urging the remaining kingmakers to collaborate with the reinstated queen to govern the affairs of Kenyase Number Two.
