Glasgow: The 'Ghana House' has officially opened in Glasgow, unveiling a venue designed to showcase the country's culture and strengthen international partnerships. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Madam Sabah Zita Benson, Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, described the facility as more than an exhibition or hospitality centre, calling it a symbol of Ghana's engagement with the world.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Benson emphasized that Ghana House represents the nation's presence, hospitality, identity, and the welcoming nature of its people. She noted that the initiative aligns with Ghana's diplomatic objectives, which now encompass culture, tourism, commerce, innovation, and sport beyond traditional government relationships.
The High Commissioner highlighted that the venue would serve as a meeting point for athletes, the Ghanaian diaspora, investors, businesses, and visitors interested in learning about Ghana. She added that it reflects a nation ready to engage the international community with dignity, openness, and purpose.
Mr Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), remarked that the opening of Ghana House signifies sport's role as a platform for building relationships and fostering cooperation among nations. He acknowledged that international sporting events provide opportunities for dialogue, cultural exchange, and business connections.
Mr Akpokavie praised Team Ghana athletes, coaches, and officials, recognizing the support from the government, sports institutions, and the Ghanaian community abroad. He extended appreciation to Ghanaians in the United Kingdom and Europe for their unwavering support for Team Ghana.
Mr Kobena Woyome, Chairman of the Ghana House Coordination Committee, explained that the project evolved from discussions on maximizing national value from Ghana's participation in major international sporting events. The concept began as 'Ghana Village' before expanding into a comprehensive platform combining cultural promotion, networking, and national branding.
Mr Woyome noted that modern sporting events have become gathering points for various stakeholders, creating opportunities that extend beyond competition. The launch of Ghana House was attended by notable dignitaries, including Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation; Mr Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority; and Mr Ernest Danso, Ghana's Chef de Mission for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
