Accra: Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that the cedi appreciated by 40.7% against the US dollar in 2025, describing it as a major sign of economic recovery. Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review to Parliament, Dr Ato Forson noted that the performance of the local currency reflects the impact of the government's fiscal consolidation and monetary policy coordination over the past year.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Forson stated that the gains were driven by improved foreign exchange inflows, increased export receipts, and prudent management of government spending. The Finance Minister emphasized that the stronger cedi is already helping to ease inflationary pressures and is expected to stabilize prices of fuel, food, and other imported goods.
"We will sustain the policies that contributed to these gains to protect households and businesses from exchange rate volatility for the rest of 2026," he added. The minister assured Parliament that the government remains committed to maintaining macroeconomic stability as it implements the remaining programs in the 2026 budget.
