EOCO Rescues 39 in Alleged Travel Fraud in Hohoe

Accra: The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has rescued 39 people following an intelligence-led operation targeting an alleged travel fraud in Hohoe in the Volta Region. According to Ghana Web, the operation, conducted on Sunday, July 19, 2026, focused on two groups operating under the names Model Q and Ignite, which are suspected of deceiving individuals with false promises of overseas travel opportunities. A press statement released by EOCO on July 22, 2026, confirmed that all 39 individuals are currently held by the agency as investigations continue. Preliminary assessments suggest that 14 of those apprehended are suspected to have connections with the alleged scheme, while the remaining 25 are believed to be victims from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, and Côte d'Ivoire. During the operation, investigators seized several items, including mobile phones, travel documents, and identification cards thought to have been used in the alleged offences. EOCO stated that these devices would undergo forensic examination to gather further evidence. EOCO emphasized its collaboration with relevant embassies and foreign authorities, particularly in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, to ensure the safe repatriation of the victims. The agency also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious recruitment or travel arrangements to EOCO or the nearest security agency.
