Accra: The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations on Migration in Ghana (CCMG) has called on the Government to accelerate the ratification of the African Union (AU) Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons, Right of Residence, and Right of Establishment. This comes in anticipation of President John Dramani Mahama's upcoming tenure as the AU Chair in 2027.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Coalition emphasized that early ratification would enhance Ghana's existing visa-free entry policy for AU citizens, bolster regional integration, support the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and reinforce Ghana's position as a leader in promoting continental mobility.
The CCMG praised President Mahama for implementing visa-free entry for all AU member state citizens, describing it as a significant step towards African integration and a solid foundation for the AU's free movement agenda. Eric Peasah, the Convener of CCMG, highlighted that ratifying the Protocol would be a logical progression following Ghana's visa-free policy adoption.
The Coalition underscored the importance of this move, especially with Ghana hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat, stating it as a critical step toward achieving success. It also highlighted the benefits of removing bureaucratic barriers, easing the financial and administrative burdens on traders, and reducing extortion vulnerabilities at borders.
CCMG, composed of over 34 organizations focused on migration governance and migrants' rights, remains committed to fostering socio-economic development through safe and orderly migration. The Coalition has consistently advocated for the AU Free Movement Protocol, uniting 70 organizations behind this cause.
Reflecting on the National Dialogue held in August 2025, CCMG emphasized the urgency of seamless regional mobility, especially with President Mahama's endorsement as West Africa's candidate for the AU Chairmanship in 2027. The Coalition urged the Government to ratify the Protocol before Mahama assumes the AU leadership, which would position Ghana as the fifth AU member state to fully adopt the Protocol.
CCMG expressed its readiness to support the Government with technical assistance and advocacy to facilitate the ratification process. The Coalition remains dedicated to ensuring African mobility as a fundamental right and protecting migrants' rights across borders. It stressed the need for sustained political commitment and effective implementation of AU frameworks to achieve deeper continental integration.
