Accra: New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organiser aspirant Atick Yakubu has raised concerns over what he perceives as an inconsistency in the response to critical comments directed at political leaders. His remarks come in the wake of the case involving TikToker Camilla Alhassan.
According to Ghana Web, Yakubu expressed his disagreement with certain comments made by Camilla but pointed out that past leaders faced similar remarks without eliciting the same reaction. He stated, "I do not agree with some of the comments. But a lot of similar derogatory comments were made against President Kufuor and President and Vice President Bawumia. We never saw some of these things, where people are arrested, beaten, fast-charged and sentenced."
Yakubu's comments follow the conviction of Camilla Alhassan by the Accra Circuit Court. Camilla pleaded guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news, resulting in a one-year prison sentence after admitting to claims that President John Dramani Mahama performed rituals involving the burial of 32 cows to secure victory in the 2024 general election.
Yakubu emphasized the importance of allowing political opponents to criticize one another while maintaining respect for those in public office. He noted that despite being part of an opposition party, he has refrained from making derogatory remarks about President Mahama. "I have never directly insulted President Mahama in any derogatory way because that could be my anchor. If he were to be my anchor, I would be happy about it," he explained.
