Juapong: President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to import cotton from Benin as part of efforts to rejuvenate Volta Star Textile Limited, a factory based in Juapong that has been dormant for several years. The initiative is part of the government's strategy to breathe new life into the textile company, once a booming enterprise in the region.
According to Ghana Web, President Mahama announced the plan during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Juapong Model Market in the Volta Region on July 16, 2026. He revealed that discussions between Ghana and Benin are at an advanced stage to sign an agreement ensuring a steady cotton supply, which is essential for restarting the factory's operations.
The President mentioned that a memorandum of understanding is being arranged with the government of Benin to secure the cotton supply. This step is crucial in the broader plan to restore the factory's production capabilities.
Additionally, the government is actively seeking a strategic investor to rehabilitate and modernize Volta Star Textile Limited. Evaluations of bids from interested investors have been completed, and the government is in the process of selecting a partner to spearhead the factory's revival.
President Mahama emphasized that the restoration of Volta Star Textile Limited is integral to his administration's industrialization agenda and the proposed Volta Economic Corridor. This initiative aims to integrate agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and export-oriented production. The revival of the factory is expected to generate employment, stimulate economic activity in Juapong, and contribute to the growth of Ghana's textile manufacturing industry.
