Tarkwa: The Tarkwa District Magistrate Court One has sentenced a 19-year-old man, Shadrack Cobbinah, to five years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing an iPhone XR and GHC5,700.00 belonging to a nurse. Cobbinah, who is unemployed, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing, and he was convicted on his own plea by Judge Bernice Mensimah Ackon.
According to Ghana News Agency, Police Sergeant Adwoa Yeboah, who prosecuted the case, informed the court that the complainant, Bernice Xornam Beble, resided at Nkamponase, while Cobbinah lived at Tarkwa Railway Station. On May 16, 2026, at approximately 01:40 hours, Beble discovered that her door had been opened and her iPhone XR, valued at GHC2,500.00, along with GHC5,700.00 in cash, had been stolen from her room.
The prosecution further detailed that on the same day, Cobbinah was seen attempting to sell the stolen iPhone and was subsequently apprehended and handed over to the police. Sergeant Yeboah reported that a cash sum of GHC3,000.00 was found on Cobbinah and was retrieved at the police station.
During interrogation, Cobbinah admitted to the theft and implicated an accomplice named Michell, who remains at large. Cobbinah also claimed that he only stole the iPhone XR and GHC4,000.00, contradicting the initial allegation of GHC5,700.00.
