Teacher Reappears in Court for Alleged Student Assault

Nyinahin: A 39-year-old teacher who allegedly assaulted a student at Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region on Friday reappeared before the Nyinahin District Court. Eric Apaflo Buernortey, charged with assault, pleaded not guilty. This appearance marks the second time the teacher has been arraigned in connection with this incident.

According to Ghana News Agency, the accused was first brought to court after the issue surfaced on June 8, 2026. During the initial arraignment, the matter was withdrawn by the Police, leading to Buernortey's discharge. However, the case has resurfaced, prompting a reappearance in court.

The Nyinahin District Court, under the jurisdiction of relieving judge Mr. Lord Delvin Essandoh, granted Buernortey bail set at GHC80,000. The bail conditions require three sureties, all of whom must reside within the court's jurisdiction. Additionally, Buernortey is mandated to report to the case investigator bi-weekly on Mondays.

The court has issued a stern warning against public misinformation regarding this case, emphasizing that any such actions would not be tolerated. "The public is hereby cautioned against any misinformation in respect of the matter as any misinformation would not be tolerated," the court stated.

Chief Inspector Eric Owusu, leading the prosecution, detailed the events leading to the charge. The complainant, Patricia Chibu, is an 18-year-old final year student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, where the accused also serves as a tutor and caretaker of Adusei Hostel. On June 8, 2026, Buernortey reportedly cautioned Chibu and other students over misconduct. During this exchange, Chibu allegedly insulted and mocked Buernortey, prompting the alleged assault.

In response to the incident, Chibu summoned local residents, who attempted to lynch Buernortey. A Police Patrol Team intervened, rescuing the teacher and escorting both parties to the police station. Chibu was provided with a Police Medical form for treatment, and upon returning the form, further investigations were conducted, resulting in Buernortey's detention and a caution statement being obtained from him.
