Floods Ravage Communities in Akatsi South, Disrupting Daily Life

Akatsi: A rainstorm that began at about 0430 hours on Monday and lasted for several hours has caused flooding in some communities in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region, disrupting school activities, businesses, and other socio-economic activities.

According to Ghana News Agency, the flooding affected sections of the River Tordzi area, the Tadzewu-Akatsi Road, parts of Akatsi township, and communities including Xavi, Avenorpedo, and several other settlements, leaving homes and roads partially submerged. Mr. Daniel Gidi, the Akatsi South Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), urged residents, particularly those living along the coastal belt and other flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and move to safer neighborhoods whenever rising floodwaters pose a threat to their lives and property.

Mr. Gidi explained that the prolonged rainfall had increased the risk of flooding in low-lying communities and advised residents to heed safety directives issued by disaster management authorities. He also cautioned against dumping refuse into drains and waterways, highlighting how this practice significantly contributes to flooding during heavy rains.

Mr. Wonder Gatepe, the Assembly Member for the Shell Tobacco Electoral Area, informed the GNA that several houses around Jumbos, a suburb of Akatsi, were inundated by the floods, forcing some residents to relocate to safer places. He noted that numerous homes and school compounds across the Municipality were partially submerged, disrupting teaching and learning as well as commercial and other economic activities.

A visit by the GNA to some of the affected communities revealed floodwaters overflowing sections of roads, cutting off access to some areas, and entering homes and public institutions. The GNA reported that no casualties had been recorded as of the time of filing this report. However, assessments were ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the floods.
