Accra: The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) office in the Western North Region has raised concerns over the increasing trend of drugs and other illicit substance abuse among the youth within the region.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Dennis Adutwum-Gyimah, Principal Narcotics Control Officer, addressed these issues at an event commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He highlighted that drug abuse among the youth has become a significant issue in the region requiring immediate attention. Mr. Adutwum-Gyimah stressed the need for urgent and coordinated action, affirming NACOC's commitment to enforcing the laws governing narcotic and psychotropic substances.
He further emphasized that prevention is the most effective strategy against drug abuse, suggesting that efforts should begin in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. He urged parents to maintain open communication with their children and encouraged teachers and counselors to identify vulnerable students early.
Mr. Adutwum-Gyimah also called on traditional and religious leaders to leverage their influence to promote positive values and urged community members to report drug-related activities. He noted that criminal networks thrive when communities remain silent.
He expressed gratitude for the strong collaboration NACOC continues to enjoy with the Food and Drug Authority, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, the Regional Coordinating Council, and various Assemblies. These partnerships have significantly bolstered prevention and enforcement efforts, and there are plans to expand them further.
Mr. Adutwum-Gyimah called on everyone to join the fight against drug abuse, acknowledging that NACOC alone cannot win this battle.
The twelve-day awareness campaign included school campaigns, sensitization programs, educational sessions, and community engagement activities. The event's climax brought together other security agencies, such as the Police, Immigration, and Fire Service.
Participants interviewed by the Ghana News Agency praised the program and called on all stakeholders to support the fight against drug abuse in the Western North Region.
