Accra: The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have temporarily shut down the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations due to severe flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region. The decision comes as a precautionary measure to safeguard personnel and prevent damage to critical electricity infrastructure.
According to Ghana Web, the joint statement from GRIDCo and ECG highlighted the inundation of critical power infrastructure at several substations, which poses significant risks to both electrical equipment and operational personnel. Engineers from both institutions are actively monitoring the situation and are conducting detailed assessments to understand the extent of the impact on the transmission and distribution network. This evaluation will be crucial before power supply can be safely restored.
The power institutions warned that if the heavy rains and flooding continue, power outages may extend to other flood-prone areas as a necessary precautionary measure to protect lives, property, and critical electricity infrastructure. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any electricity-related hazards, such as fallen electricity poles or exposed power lines, to the nearest ECG office or through the company's customer service channels.
GRIDCo and ECG expressed their apologies for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outages and reassured affected customers that electricity supply would be restored as soon as it is safe to do so. The statement emphasized that every effort will be made to restore power supply promptly once weather conditions improve.
