Accra: The Regional Maritime University (RMU) celebrated its 20th Congregation, conferring degrees and diplomas to 368 graduates in a ceremony that underscored the critical role of the maritime sector in Ghana's economic transformation. The graduating class included 82 master's degree holders, 213 bachelor's degree recipients, and 73 diploma graduates.
According to Ghana Web, Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe emphasized the importance of maritime education and industry development in his address at the event. As RMU's Chancellor and Board Chairman, Nikpe reaffirmed the government's commitment to aligning maritime education with national priorities, including the 24-hour Economy policy and modern supply chain integration. He highlighted the ongoing transformation in the maritime sector, driven by automation, digitalization, and sustainable shipping practices, stressing the need for RMU to modernize its training systems and strengthen research capacity.
Nikpe assured RMU of strategic partnerships to enhance access to advanced marine engineering technologies and sustainable research funding. He praised the university's management and faculty for their resilience and commitment to training maritime professionals amid a rapidly evolving global shipping environment.
Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., RMU's Acting Vice-Chancellor, congratulated the graduates and urged them to be worthy ambassadors of the university. He noted challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and encroachment on university lands, appealing for support from member states and the government to address these issues.
The ceremony also honored outstanding staff and students for their contributions. Michael Odai Odiko was named Employee of the Year (Senior Staff - Teaching), while Jone Addai-Marfo received the Vice-Chancellor's Award for his contributions to university development. Among the graduates, Akomaning Patricia Agyeiwaa emerged as the Best Overall Postgraduate Student, with several others recognized for excellence in their respective fields.
The event further acknowledged the contributions of industry partners and alumni through various awards, and members of the Sierra Leone Committee of Experts were honored for their support in the university's growth and development.
