Accra: Mr. Paul Afoko, aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced his agenda to rejuvenate the party by focusing on unification, restructuring, and strengthening efforts aimed at recapturing political power in 2028. Mr. Afoko emphasized that the party's return to government largely hinges on its ability to heal internal divisions, bolster grassroots structures, and restore unity among its members.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afoko, a former National Chairman of the NPP, addressed delegates and executives in Tamale during his campaign tour. He is seeking support for his bid to be elected National Chairman in the upcoming NPP National Executive elections later this year. Mr. Afoko expressed concerns over the persistent internal divisions, bitterness, and disagreements that he believes have significantly contributed to the NPP's recent electoral setbacks.
He highlighted the party's declining electoral fortunes, noting the decrease in parliamentary seats from 169 in 2016 to 137 in 2020, and further down to 87 seats in 2024. This trend underscored the urgent need for reconciliation and renewed commitment among members. Mr. Afoko urged party faithful to forgive one another and focus on rebuilding the NPP rather than dwelling on past grievances.
Mr. Afoko also pointed out the strategic opportunity for the NPP to reorganize itself, with President John Dramani Mahama expected to complete his constitutional mandate, allowing the party to position itself strongly for the next election cycle. He warned that this opportunity could be lost if internal wrangling, gossip, and mistrust persisted.
Recalling reforms introduced during his previous tenure as National Chairman, Mr. Afoko emphasized the importance of strengthening polling station structures and providing financial support to constituency executives to improve grassroots mobilization. He reiterated that the party's greatest strength lies in its grassroots membership and the need for renewed investment in local party structures.
Mr. Afoko appealed to delegates to support his bid for the national chairmanship position, asserting that he possesses the experience, commitment, and vision required to restore the party's unity and electoral fortunes. He urged members to support him with prayers and collective effort, stressing that success in the next general election would depend on the party's ability to work together as one family.
