Colombo: Under the present administration, Sri Lanka has so far seized more than 10 tonnes of various narcotics, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told the parliament Thursday. Dissanayake disclosed that a total of 3,390 kg of heroin, 304 kg of cocaine, 5,543 kg of crystal methamphetamine (ice), 1,521 kg of Kush cannabis, 5,110,735 narcotic pills, and 2,454,267 drug capsules were confiscated in law enforcement operations.
According to Ghana News Agency, the president also highlighted that 58 organized crime suspects had been arrested abroad and extradited to Sri Lanka. He emphasized the necessity of decisively addressing corruption, organized criminal networks, drug trafficking, and the links between crime and politics.
The president asserted that Sri Lanka already possesses the legal framework and state institutions required to combat such activities, underscoring the commitment of his administration to tackle these issues head-on.
