WAN-Hive Ghana and KGL Foundation Launch SportHER Clubs Project in Bono Region

Dumasua: Women centered Non-Governmental Organisation, WAN-Hive Ghana in partnership with the KGL Foundation, another NGO, has launched the 'SportHER Clubs Project' to unearth and nurture girls' sporting talents in Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Bono Region. The project aims to increase female participation in sports while equipping them with entrepreneurial skills.

According to Ghana News Agency, Miss Janat Issifu, the Chief Executive Officer of WAN-Hive Ghana, stated that each of the participating schools has received sports equipment and materials to aid their training. The equipment includes basketballs, rims and nets, volleyballs, volleyball nets, jerseys, training bibs, cones, pumps, and whistles. These have been distributed to Wamanafo SHS, Mansen SHS in the Dormaa East District, the Salvation Army SHS in the Dormaa West District, Koase STEM SHS, Wenchi Methodist SHS, and Kyem Amponsah SHS in Sunyani West.

Speaking at the launch of the project at Dumasua in the Sunyani West Municipality, Ms. Issifu highlighted that the initiative builds on the successes of phase one of the SportHER project implemented in 2025. Currently, the project has enrolled 240 female students, with each of the six schools having 40 participants.

Ms. Issifu addressed misconceptions surrounding girls in sports, emphasizing that active participation in sports does not hinder academic performance or lead to irresponsibility. She explained that the project is designed to empower girls through sporting activities and entrepreneurship training.

Ms. Issifu added that the project is entering an important implementation phase with an upcoming Training of Trainers (ToT) program for club coordinators. This training will equip coordinators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively guide club activities in their respective schools.

Following the ToT program, the clubs will commence structured sports training sessions, with facilitators leading entrepreneurship sessions to develop practical business, leadership, and life skills. Preparations are underway for a mega competition among the project beneficiary schools to showcase the sporting skills and talents of the girls. The project aims to celebrate teamwork, leadership, resilience, and the transformative impact of sports and entrepreneurship on girls' empowerment.
