Accra: The Attorney General has raised a legal objection to the withdrawal of service by Mr. Andy Appiah-Kubi, counsel for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, the Deputy Attorney General, indicated that his objection was based on grounds of 'jurisdiction, capacity and Standi.' The preliminary objection was filed by Dr. Srem-Sai and dated June 12, 2026, in response to Mr. Appiah-Kubi's notice to withdraw his legal service due to concerns about the conduct of court proceedings.
Meanwhile, the High Court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, has scheduled July 3, 2026, for delivering judgment in the Samreboi Illegal Mining case, in which Boasiako and two others are standing trial. Mr. Appiah-Kubi and the prosecution are expected to file their written addresses before the court's judgment.
Boasiako, a businessman and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is involved in three separate cases before different courts. The Samreboi illegal mining case involves a deed of assignment allegedly given to accused persons, now turned prosecution witnesses, for illegal mining in the Samreboi Forest Reserve. Boasiako and his firm, Akonta Mining Company Limited, have denied the charges. His accomplice, Kwame Antwi, remains at large.
The motion for Mr. Appiah-Kubi's withdrawal of service is expected to be presented at the High Court on Monday, June 15.
