KGL Foundation Champions Free Healthcare in Bolgatanga

Bolgatanga: The KGL Foundation has launched a major initiative to provide free health screening services to residents of the Bolgatanga Municipality, effectively removing cost barriers to essential medical checks and promoting early detection and preventive healthcare.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Nii Ankonu Annorbah-Sarpei, Programmes Manager of the Foundation, highlighted the importance of routine health checks, noting that many Ghanaians neglect these due to financial constraints. He stressed that knowing one's health status is a critical first step in preventing complications and avoiding emergency treatments, as early detection can prevent many deaths.

The initiative was announced in a statement by the KGL Foundation, emphasizing its goal to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent individuals from accessing basic health services. The exercise successfully attracted many residents, providing tests for the first time for some, not out of neglect, but due to the prohibitive costs of routine medical check-ups.

The screening addressed various conditions, including Hepatitis B and C, HIV, malaria, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and other essential health assessments. It also included mental health evaluations, often overlooked in community health outreach, and a blood donation exercise. Early detection of these conditions, which often develop without visible symptoms, is crucial to improving health outcomes.

Ms. Rosemary Akolbire, a Public Health Nurse, voiced concerns about the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, emphasizing that free community interventions are vital to addressing healthcare access gaps, particularly for vulnerable and low-income groups.

The statement pointed out that while diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, hepatitis, HIV, and mental health conditions affect people across all income levels, access to diagnosis often hinges on financial capacity. Despite inclement weather, residents attended the exercise in significant numbers, underscoring the strong demand for accessible healthcare services.

Mr. Abubakar Zakaria, a beneficiary, praised the initiative as timely and necessary, reflecting the sentiments of many residents who participated in the exercise. Participants left with improved awareness of their health status and a greater understanding of personal health management.

Mr. Annorbah-Sarpei further underscored the importance of investing in the health of women and children, describing them as crucial to family and national development. He noted that their wellbeing is closely linked to social and economic progress and should be prioritized in development planning.

Beneficiaries urged other organizations to replicate similar initiatives in communities across the country. The statement concluded by stating that the KGL Foundation, through this intervention, demonstrated that effective health advocacy involves not only raising awareness but also removing barriers and delivering services directly to the community.
