Accra: The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have stepped up efforts to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The move is aimed at preventing power outages during matches and ensuring football fans across the country enjoy a seamless viewing experience.
According to Ghana Web, a strategic meeting was held on June 9, 2026, where the three institutions reviewed operational preparedness and agreed on measures to maintain network stability during the tournament. Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, stated that the Commission would intensify oversight to ensure quality service delivery. He emphasized that PURC remains fully committed to protecting consumer rights and will continue to monitor the operations of the service providers to ensure reliable electricity supply throughout the World Cup period.
The Commission's Energy Services and Performance Monitoring Directorate and Regional Operations and Consumer Services Directorate will actively monitor power supply reliability. Direct communication channels have been established with key technical personnel of ECG and GRIDCo to facilitate rapid intervention during emergencies. Acting Managing Director of ECG, Ing Kwame Kpekpena, announced that all planned maintenance works would be suspended during the tournament, limiting work to emergency fault rectifications.
Ing Kwame Kpekpena added that technical teams and contractors would be stationed near major demand centers to respond quickly to faults, with security around critical power infrastructure being strengthened in collaboration with National Security. On the transmission side, GRIDCo Chief Executive, Ing Frank Otchere, mentioned that the company had already begun implementing measures to minimize disruptions. All identified hotspots within the electricity network should be addressed, and all non-critical planned maintenance should be deferred.
He further noted that GRIDCo has intensified vegetation management along transmission lines and will ensure all major substations are physically manned around the clock during the competition. Dr. Suleman commended both utilities for the proactive and consumer-focused measures, highlighting the intentional efforts to serve and protect the interests of Ghanaian consumers.
The PURC assures it will remain on standby throughout the tournament to address any unforeseen challenges and ensure a reliable power supply for households and businesses across the country.
