Real Madrid’s £130m Alvarez Bid Rejected by Atletico Madrid

Madrid: Real Madrid have had a 150 million euro (£130 million) offer for striker Julian Alvarez rejected by city rivals Atletico Madrid. Real president Florentino Perez had pledged to make a 150 million euro offer for an unnamed "galactico" player if re-elected. Following his successful re-election, Perez moved quickly to fulfill his promise. According to Ghana Web, the bid for the 26-year-old Argentine forward was rejected by Atletico Madrid, who cited Alvarez's release clause of 500 million euros (£430 million) as the reason. In a statement, Real Madrid announced, "Following the meeting of the board of directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez." Atletico expressed their gratitude for the proposal but declined the offer, referencing the player's release clause. Atletico Madrid responded to the Real Madrid statement on social media with a series of laughing emojis. In a subsequent post, they clarified the ir position, stating, "You must have confused education with gratitude, but to leave no doubt: we don't thank you for anything. We neither study nor consider any offer for Julian." They added humorously, "How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than Barcelona does." Atletico further commented on their relationship with Real Madrid, humorously suggesting better relations, "P.S. Taking advantage of the good relationship with your new president, let's see if you stop 'stealing' players from our Academy. Thanks a lot, @realmadrid!" Julian Alvarez, a former Manchester City player who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, joined Atletico Madrid in an £81.5 million deal in 2024. Alvarez scored 20 goals in 49 appearances last season, helping Atletico finish fourth in La Liga and reach the Champions League semi-finals. Meanwhile, Real Madrid confirmed the departure of head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, with Jose Mourinho set to be appointed in his place. Arbeloa, who was promoted from Real Madrid B in January, had announced he would not continue after a trophyless season. Mourinho, who previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, signed a three-year deal in May, contingent on Perez's re-election. A statement from Real Madrid expressed gratitude to Arbeloa, saying, "Real Madrid is deeply grateful to Alvaro Arbeloa, who throughout his time at the club, from his time in our youth academy, has consistently demonstrated loyalty, commitment, and professionalism. He exemplifies the values of our club." The club wished Arbeloa and his family the best of luck in their future endeavors.
