Ashaiman: The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a strong call for urgent action against climate change, warning that the increasing frequency of environmental disasters is a direct consequence of unsustainable human activities.
According to Ghana News Agency, Ms. Priscilla Arhin, Deputy Director of the EPA for the Greater Accra East Region, emphasized during the World Environment Day celebration in Ashaiman, organized by the National Commission on Civic Education, that the earth is sending clear warning signals that must no longer be ignored. She highlighted extreme heatwaves, wildfires, and the rapid melting of glaciers as evidence of the climate crisis.
Ms. Arhin pointed out that flooding is one of Ghana's most pressing environmental challenges, attributing its increase to poor environmental practices by citizens. She noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and building constructions on waterways obstruct the natural flow of water, exacerbating flooding during heavy rains.
She emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in restoring and protecting the environment, stating that environmental sustainability can only be achieved if citizens support government efforts by adopting responsible practices. Ms. Arhin also raised concerns about the destruction of natural resources through illegal mining, known as galamsey, which has severely degraded several forest reserves and polluted major rivers.
Ms. Arhin urged citizens to collectively abandon harmful environmental practices and work towards restoring degraded ecosystems. She called for national unity in healing the environment and making it a better place to live.
Ms. Salvata Mawulom Koku, Ashaiman Municipal Director of the NCCE, also spoke at the event, urging students to adopt responsible waste management practices, particularly regarding plastic waste disposal. She stressed the importance of recognizing environmental warning signs and acting collectively to safeguard the earth for future generations. Ms. Koku encouraged students to take environmental education seriously and apply their knowledge to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
