Accra: The 2001 Year Group of the Old Abuscodians Association on Monday launched its Silver Jubilee celebrations in Accra and unveiled plans to construct a multi-purpose basketball and volleyball court as its legacy project for the Abuakwa State College.
According to Ghana News Agency, the proposed project, estimated at GH400,000, aims to enhance sports development and recreational opportunities for students while giving back to the institution that shaped the lives of members of the year group. The initiative is designed to enhance the school's sporting infrastructure and contribute to the holistic development of students.
The anniversary is themed 'YAANOM 2G1 Silver Jubilee-Our Roots, Our Journey, the Role of Old Students.' Mrs Audrey Anim-Agyapong, Chairperson of the 2001 Year Group, stated that the anniversary celebration is an opportunity for members to reflect on the role the school played in shaping their lives through knowledge, discipline, and values. She highlighted the decision to undertake the sports court project to ensure that future generations of students enjoy better opportunities and facilities.
Mrs Anim-Agyapong commended the planning committee for its dedication and urged members of the association to reconnect, celebrate their shared heritage, and contribute towards building a stronger legacy for the school. Mr Kwaku Yeboah, a member of the Planning Committee, mentioned that the project emerged from extensive consultations with school authorities and students.
Mr Yeboah emphasized that the project is more than just a sports facility; it represents a commitment to their heritage and a foundation for the next generation. He explained that the group initially considered other infrastructure projects but found that many were already under contract. Engagements with students revealed a strong preference for improved sports facilities, with both male and female students expressing interest in a basketball court.
Consultations led to the decision to construct a dual-purpose basketball and volleyball court to serve a wider range of students. Mr Yeboah noted that more than 40 alumni have pledged support towards the project and expressed confidence that additional members will contribute to ensure its successful completion. He said the group hopes to mobilize the required resources and complete the project within six months through fundraising and voluntary contributions.
Mr Eric Asare Opare, Assistant Head (Administration) of Abuakwa State College, described the Silver Jubilee as a celebration of lives transformed, dreams realized, and the enduring values instilled by the institution over the years. He noted that Abuakwa State College, now a Category A school and the oldest second-cycle institution in the Eastern Region, has produced many professionals, including doctors, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and public servants.
Mr Opare urged members of the 2001 Year Group to continue supporting their alma mater through mentorship programs and infrastructure development initiatives. He expressed appreciation for the planned sports court and hopes that the facility will be completed and commissioned during the school's 90th-anniversary celebrations next year.
