Accra: A woman identified as an Assembly Member for the New Weija East Electoral Area in the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly has denied allegations that residents were not informed before the recent spillage of the Weija Dam, which has submerged homes and destroyed properties in surrounding communities.
According to Ghana Web, the Assembly Member explained in a video shared by SikaOfficial's X page on May 28, 2026, that efforts to announce the opening of the dam were constrained by an existing ban on noise making within the community. She stated, 'To be frank with you, they have banned noise making, so I cannot go round with the megaphone to give the announcement,' while addressing complaints from affected residents.
The Assembly Member alleged that some residents ignored warnings ahead of the spillage. She mentioned that phone messages were sent to certain individuals in the communities to circulate among residents. She recounted an instance where she approached a woman nearby to inform her to move to higher grounds, but the woman, occupied with making her banku, ignored the warning.
The comments come after several residents accused local authorities of failing to adequately warn communities before the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam, following heavy rainfall in parts of Accra. Floodwaters from the spillage reportedly inundated homes, displaced residents, and damaged personal belongings in several low-lying communities around Weija and surrounding areas.
The Assembly Member maintained that the claim that authorities failed to communicate entirely was inaccurate, emphasizing that the restrictions on public announcements made it difficult to use traditional information dissemination methods such as megaphones. The latest flooding incident has reignited concerns about flood preparedness, communication systems, and emergency response measures in communities situated around the Weija Dam.
