Accra: Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed, has attributed the severe flooding in parts of his constituency to sustained heavy rainfall and an overwhelmed Weija Dam system. Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen, the MP described the situation as dire, noting that over a thousand homes have already been submerged, leaving many residents stranded and distressed.
According to Ghana Web, many affected families, including the MP's assistant, have lost nearly all their belongings, with only a few managing to salvage little or nothing amid the devastation. Jerry Ahmed emphasized the cumulative effect of the rainfall, highlighting that a significant amount of water flows into the Weija Dam, which is now overflowing and operating at a critical level. Areas such as Away, Ash bread, Yarboman, and Tetegu have been severely impacted.
The MP reported that the dam is virtually at its brim, making it challenging to manage the situation. The flooding has resulted in significant displacement and property destruction, with residents struggling to cope with the aftermath of the rising waters. The call for urgent intervention is crucial as the community seeks support to mitigate the impact of this natural disaster.
