Akwaduro: Residents of Akwaduro in the Ahafo Region say a poorly built drainage system is putting lives and livelihoods at risk and they want the government to act before a disaster strikes. Community members spoke to Adom News on May 22, 2026, during an engagement with staff of the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, where they raised alarm over recurring floods that have made life difficult in the farming community.
According to Ghana Web, Queen Mother Nana Yaa Amoakoa highlighted that the contractor assigned by the government to construct their road only built drainage on one side, leaving the other side completely unattended. She pointed out that the neglected side is where most residents have settled, and due to the sloping terrain, every rainfall sends water rushing through the community, causing widespread flooding and severe erosion.
The situation has given rise to severe erosion across the community, which Nana Yaa Amoakoa said poses a danger to all residents, particularly children. She noted that farmlands and property are also being destroyed with each downpour. Nana Yaa Amoakoa emphasized that the community can no longer wait and urged the government to treat the matter with urgency before lives are lost.
Residents stress that beyond the safety threat, the repeated flooding is hurting their farming activities and damaging property. The Asunafo North Municipal Assembly is yet to officially respond to the concerns raised.
