Accra: The Malta High Commissioner to Ghana, Ronald Micallef, has praised the Ghana Insurance University (GIU) following its attainment of full university status. The milestone was announced during the institution's 19th Graduation Dinner and Awards Ceremony held at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. Addressing the gathering, Micallef described the achievement as a significant step in Ghana's efforts to strengthen specialized education for the insurance and financial services sectors.
According to Ghana Web, Micallef stated, "Nineteen years is not merely a measure of time. It represents nearly two decades of commitment to knowledge, professional excellence, innovation, and service to Ghana's financial and insurance sectors. Institutions such as this help shape the confidence of nations." He further noted that Malta's own development as an international financial and insurance centre mirrors Ghana's progress, emphasizing that the two countries continue to deepen relations based on professionalism, enterprise, and mutual respect.
GIU has also been officially affiliated with the University of Ghana. Rector Richard Okyere announced that the university will begin enrolling students in September for new academic programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science with Insurance, a Bachelor of Science in Insurance, and insurance-focused courses within a Bachelor of Science in Computer and Data Science. The University of Ghana's Registrar, Emelia Agyei-Mensah, speaking on behalf of Vice-Chancellor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, confirmed that student admissions will commence in the next academic year, particularly in actuarial and data management sciences. She assured stakeholders of the University of Ghana's commitment to supporting GIU's development.
Acting Commissioner of Insurance and Chairperson of GIU, Abiba Zakariah, urged the graduating class to embrace continuous learning, innovation, and integrity. "The insurance industry requires professionals who are willing to learn continuously, embrace change and innovation, and uphold integrity," she said. Keynote speaker and entrepreneur Augustine Kwame Addo also encouraged graduates to become ambassadors of professionalism and ethical leadership.
Director of the Malta International Training Centre, Ramon Muscat, congratulated GIU on its new status and reaffirmed the centre's continued support. He noted that the partnership between MITC and GIU has been in place since 2006 and remains focused on advancing professional insurance education in Ghana.
