Accra: Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has openly criticized the treatment of the party's National Organiser, Joseph Yamin. Gbande, who also holds the position of Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, expressed his concerns regarding what he perceives as unfair treatment towards Yamin, despite his contributions and sacrifices for the party.
According to Ghana Web, Gbande voiced his frustration over the situation, emphasizing that Yamin has been left to face challenges on his own. He further challenged anyone to provide evidence of wrongdoing by Yamin, stating that if such evidence is found, both he and Yamin should be jailed. Gbande insisted that if no wrongdoing is proven, those who have accused Yamin should apologize.
In an interview on Onua TV on May 11, 2026, Gbande dismissed allegations of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, against Yamin as baseless. He urged for transparency, calling on Raymond Archer to release any reports against Yamin, emphasizing that nothing should be concealed.
The controversy has roots in a directive from the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, instructing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate allegations of illegal mining involving NDC executives, including Yamin. The investigation is to encompass issues highlighted in a report by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng on illegal mining. EOCO has also been advised to involve the CEO of the Minerals Commission for further insights.
Accusations against Yamin and NDC's Third Vice Chairman, Yakubu Abanga, include allegedly supporting an anti-galamsey taskforce accused of harassing legitimate miners. The unfolding events have stirred significant attention within the party and the nation.
