The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reported that it is unaware of the current location of its Agona West Constituency Organiser, David Essandoh, also known as 'Sam Toys,' following his alleged arrest by armed men believed to be security operatives.
According to Ghana Web, the NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, commonly referred to as Nana B, stated that Essandoh was taken by armed men who arrived in a Land Cruiser. Nana B explained that he was informed about the situation through urgent calls from the Regional Chairman, Secretary, and the Constituency, detailing that Essandoh was picked up by ten men in the vehicle. Despite efforts to locate him, Essandoh's whereabouts remain unknown. Nana B mentioned that both the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and National Security have denied any knowledge or involvement in the arrest.
Nana Boakye characterized the arrest as swift and coordinated, with witnesses unable to recall the vehicle's registration numbers. He expressed concern over the lack of transparency and questioned the grounds for Essandoh's arrest, particularly in relation to public discussions on the country's frequent power outages, known as 'dumsor.' Nana Boakye argued that discussing such issues should not be deemed criminal, as it is a common topic among Ghanaians.
Additionally, Nana Boakye shared that he had spoken with a CID officer who allegedly linked Essandoh's arrest to a billboard incident, not related to comments on power outages. The officer reportedly suggested that the issue involved a message celebrating former President Mahama, which led to allegations of publishing false news. However, Nana Boakye highlighted inconsistencies in the accounts, noting that while the CID was reportedly involved in the initial stages, they later denied any participation in the arrest.
The NPP plans to formally address the situation with the police, as the party seeks clarity on Essandoh's whereabouts. Eyewitnesses reported that Essandoh was taken in a 'Rambo-style' operation involving armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), allegedly due to a Facebook post.
