Accra: Mrs Fati Kine Lam, the Bono Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has issued a warning to boat transport operators to refrain from overloading passengers to prevent disasters. She emphasized the importance of fishing communities ensuring that boat operators adhere to the weight limits of their vessels when transporting fisherfolks and travelers.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs Lam delivered this caution during an interview on the sidelines of presenting life jackets to the Banda-Bongase fishing community in the Banda District. The regional directorate of NADMO provided over 100 reflective life jackets to the community, which operates on the Bui Dam reservoir.
Mrs Lam highlighted the necessity for operators to remain within their boats' passenger capacity and maximum weight to prevent accidents on the reservoir. She noted the government's commitment to prioritizing safety in fishing communities and addressing their challenges.
Additionally, Mrs Lam warned operators against speeding, as tree stumps in the reservoir could pose a threat and lead to capsizing. She advised them to be vigilant of weather conditions and return to shore promptly if the weather appears unfavorable.
Furthermore, Mrs Lam emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols and urged both boat riders and passengers to wear life jackets during journeys on the reservoir. Earlier, she engaged with the fisherfolks, fishmongers, traders, residents, traditional leaders, and boat operators at the Banda-Bongase fishing community, providing guidance on basic safety protocols.
