Accra: Mr Edward Asante, a Counsellor and Gospel Minister at the Church of Christ, Ashaiman-Lebanon, has highlighted the importance of sacrificial love and mutual respect as essential elements for preserving modern marriages. During a special family life lectureship at the church, he spoke on the theme 'Love and Respect in Marriage', emphasizing the significance of understanding emotional and biblical roles within the domestic unit for both husbands and wives.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Asante pointed out that while both love and respect are necessary from each partner, they serve as primary emotional motivators for different genders. He referenced Ephesians 5:25 to illustrate his point, urging husbands to emulate the sacrificial love of Christ. He described this love as a selfless commitment to the welfare and security of the wife and the household. "A husband's love must be sacrificial. It is a responsibility that requires a man to give of himself for the growth and peace of his family," he explained.
In addressing the role of wives, Mr Asante stressed that respect is crucial for motivating men to lead effectively. He encouraged women to be mindful of their tone and conduct, both publicly and privately, noting that a wife who honors her husband fosters a conducive environment for the marriage to thrive. During a question-and-answer session, he clarified that the emphasis on respect is not about inferiority but about achieving divine harmony, referencing Colossians 3:18-19 to advise against husbands being harsh or authoritarian.
Mr Asante further explained that "Marriage is a partnership of vital but distinct roles. When a husband loves without being harsh and a wife supports with sincerity, the home becomes a place of peace and a model for the next generation." The lectureship concluded with worship and intercessory prayer sessions for families, and a call for couples to focus on their responsibilities rather than on their partner's shortcomings, thus ensuring a lasting legacy of domestic harmony.
