Accra: Dr Anastasia Nana Ama Kumi-Korsah, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has urged students engaged in politics to help uphold and protect the integrity of Ghana's parliamentary democracy by promoting tolerance, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. She emphasized that parliamentary processes are the cornerstone of democratic governance and must be safeguarded against actions that could undermine public confidence in the country's democratic institutions.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Kumi-Korsah made the call at the inaugural sitting of the Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) Parliamentary Council of the UCC. She highlighted that Ghana's democratic progress can only be sustained when political actors prioritize national interest over partisan considerations.
"Parliamentary democracy thrives on dialogue, consensus-building, and mutual respect. We must all work together to protect the integrity of the system and strengthen the confidence of the people in democratic governance," she stated. Dr Kumi-Korsah urged the student representatives to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the dignity of the University and the trust reposed in them by their colleagues.
She appealed to the media and civil society organizations to continue playing constructive roles in deepening democratic accountability through objective reporting and enhanced civic engagement. Dr Kumi-Korsah pointed out that increasing political polarization and the spread of misinformation pose significant threats to democratic stability and national cohesion.
Furthermore, Dr Kumi-Korsah, who is also a parliamentary aspirant for the Cape Coast North Constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, encouraged the students to actively participate in democratic processes while upholding the values of patriotism, discipline, and tolerance.
Ms Lydia Akuffo, Speaker of the FASA Parliamentary Council, congratulated the elected members and urged them to discharge their duties responsibly. She reminded them of the challenges ahead and encouraged them to remain steadfast and united in overcoming obstacles during their tenure. Ms Akuffo called for cooperation and collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the successful achievement of the Council's mission.
