Tano north: The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, has reacted to ongoing discussions surrounding the Bank of Ghana's reported GHS34 billion loss for 2025, insisting that the figure has already been confirmed by the central bank. In a post on X on May 10, 2026, the lawmaker argued that attempts to dispute or downplay the reported loss were misleading, stressing that the matter was no longer in doubt.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Boako highlighted that the Bank of Ghana itself has confirmed the GHS34 billion loss in subsequent public releases on its social media channels. He questioned why there are attempts to obscure this fact, emphasizing that the issue is not in dispute. Dr Boako further explained the complexity in comparing the central bank's financial performance over time, noting that changes in reporting formats necessitate the proper restatement of earlier accounts.
Dr Boako elaborated on the changes in accounting practices, mentioning that previous practices recorded all gains and losses in the Profit and Loss (P and L) statement. However, the current management introduced a new structure in 2024, separating some items into Other Comprehensive Income (OCI). He indicated that this change has contributed to public confusion regarding the bank's financial position.
He emphasized that although OCI items are reported separately, they still represent losses that impact the central bank's overall financial health and equity position. Dr Boako asserted, "Either way, whether OCI is included in the P and L or not, an OCI loss is still a loss. It is reflected in the bank's negative equity position."
