Kumasi: The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reportedly announced his plans to reconstitute the Asanteman Standing Committee, an executive organ of the Asanteman Council. This move comes in response to concerns over the committee's current ineffectiveness, which has been linked to misconduct across various paramountcies within the Asante Kingdom.
According to Ghana Web, the Asantehene expressed his dissatisfaction during an Asanteman Council meeting held on April 20, 2026. He highlighted that the committee's inefficacy has contributed to issues in areas such as Sampa, Nkyeraa, Amantim, and parts of Asante Akyem. The reconstitution is aimed at restoring order and reinforcing traditional authority in his kingdom.
The Asantehene emphasized that the committee's inactivity has allowed room for misbehaviour in some jurisdictions within the Bono Region. He noted that the lack of enforcement of court decisions on chieftaincy matters is a significant problem. In particular, he pointed to a court ruling in favour of Amantimhene that has not been respected, and similar issues in Nkyeraa, which is now recognized as a Divisional Council in the House of Chiefs.
He further mentioned that despite court rulings, an individual in Sampa, claiming to be a royal and chief, continues to resist the legitimate authority of Sampahene Gyafla. The Asantehene asserted that the rightful authority would be restored, and misrepresentations of leadership would not be tolerated.
To address these issues, the Asantehene has directed traditional rulers across the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Asante Akyem regions to convene and select two representatives each to form the reconstituted committee.
