Accra: The Ghana Armed Forces have initiated work on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, clearing 17.75 kilometres of thick vegetation just weeks after deployment. The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, shared the update on X on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, commending the military for the rapid progress on the flagship infrastructure initiative.
According to Ghana Web, four military work groups are currently operating from Asuboa, near Akim Oda, pushing through challenging weather conditions to meet a tight 20-week timeline for the initial clearing phase. The 198.7-kilometre, six-lane expressway is a major priority of the administration of President John Dramani Mahama. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi from the current six hours to approximately two hours.
In November 2025, Dr Forson reaffirmed the government's commitment to delivering the entire project within three years. Senior military officers, including the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, have visited the site to inspect progress and commended the troops for their pace and dedication. Addressing the soldiers, Lieutenant General Agyapong urged caution and respect for property rights.
He advised the troops to ensure that any dealings involving farms and properties are assessed by valuers before proceeding. Lieutenant General Agyapong expressed gratitude for the soldiers' hard work and assured them that necessary resources would be provided to ensure the project's completion.
Parliament has already approved the concession agreement for the project, with the Ministry of Roads and Highways as the contracting authority and Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited as the concessionaire.
