Accra: The High Court has granted bail to embattled social media influencer Frederick Kumi, widely recognized by his alias Abu Trica. This decision was revealed by his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, through a Facebook post dated April 21, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the bail conditions require Abu Trica to post a bond of GHS30 million with two sureties. This ruling enables him to enjoy temporary freedom as legal proceedings concerning his potential extradition to the United States continue. Abu Trica faces charges related to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
Leading his defense, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has lodged a preliminary objection, challenging the legal foundation of the extradition case. The defense team contends that the charges do not fall under the 1931 extradition treaty between Ghana and the United States. They argue that neither wire fraud nor money laundering is explicitly mentioned as extraditable offenses in the treaty, and the conspiracy clause pertains exclusively to specific offenses unrelated to this case.
The defense further argues that Ghana is not permitted to use recent domestic legislation to broaden the scope of the treaty, asserting that extradition should strictly adhere to the offenses mutually agreed upon by both nations.
Abu Trica was re-arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) after he was discharged by the Gbese District Court on January 26, 2026, when the state withdrew previous charges. Prosecutors then filed new charges of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud by false pretense against him.
The ongoing proceedings will decide if Abu Trica will be extradited to the United States to face trial. He was initially apprehended on December 11, 2025, following an indictment by US authorities for his purported involvement in a massive online romance scam valued at over $8 million.
