Nkwanta: A 25-year-old man was shot dead near the Olivia Drinking Spot in Nkwanta, located within the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region. The victim has been identified as Richmond Benye Ayitey, confirmed by the Oti Regional Coordinating Council (ORCC).
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Mr. John Kwadwo Gyapong Ababio, the Oti Regional Minister, indicated that the shooting occurred at approximately 2030 hours on Saturday, May 2, 2026. A joint team comprising Police, Military, BNI, and Defence Intelligence personnel responded to the location and discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood.
The deceased, noted as an Akyode, sustained multiple pellet wounds to the right side of the head, neck, and shoulder. Despite being rushed to St. Joseph Hospital in Nkwanta for treatment, he was pronounced dead at approximately 2230 hours while receiving medical care. The body has been placed in the hospital's morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Mr. Gyapong, representing the people of the Oti Region, extended condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that efforts would be made to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Regional Security Council is actively working to apprehend those responsible and will communicate further developments as they arise.
The statement emphasized REGSEC's commitment to maintaining peace and security in the Nkwanta South Municipality and the Oti Region, ensuring that no individual or group disrupts the area's relative peace. The Regional Minister encouraged all parties to utilize legal and traditional dispute resolution mechanisms to address any grievances or misunderstandings.
