Accra: Former World champion, Tobi Amusan, has confirmed her participation in the upcoming 2026 African Senior Athletics Championship in Ghana. Tobi Amusan will lead a formidable Nigerian team at the Championship in Accra, which will be held from May 12-17 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. The Nigerian athlete, a specialist in the 100m hurdles, holds the current world record in the 100 metres hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds, achieved at the 2022 women's semi-final in Eugene.
According to Ghana Web, the 28-year-old Amusan is also the reigning Commonwealth and African champion in the 100m hurdles. She has won consecutive Commonwealth and African titles in 2018 and 2022 in the 100m hurdles and is a two-time African Games champion.
Also expected to make a significant impact in Accra is Zambian 400m Olympian Muzala Samukonga. The 23-year-old athlete claimed a bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games. At just 19, he secured gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the African Championships. Currently ranked ninth in the world in the 400m, Samukonga is predicted to be one of the standout performers at the championships, which Ghana is hosting for the first time in over four decades.
More than 1,000 athletes are anticipated to compete at the 24th edition of the biennial event.
