Takoradi: Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) II David Asah Darko, the Western Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has advised the public to desist from attacking firefighters in their line of duty. He highlighted that there have been several incidents of unwarranted attacks on firefighters and fire equipment during fire outbreaks, and such actions compromise public safety.
According to Ghana News Agency, ACFO II Darko offered this advice during a float organized by the Western Regional Fire Command on the principal streets of Takoradi. The event was part of a week-long series of activities to mark this year's International Firefighters Day (IFFD). The theme for the occasion was: 'Attack on firefighters and equipment is attack on public safety: End assaults and protect the firefighter.'
ACFO II Darko explained that often people attack firefighters at fire scenes because they believe there is a delay in response. However, he noted that some issues are beyond the control of the firefighters, and the public may not fully understand these constraints. He emphasized that attacking firefighters equates to attacking public safety as it hinders their ability to combat fires effectively.
Despite these challenges, the Western Regional Fire Commander assured that firefighters would continue to perform their duties diligently to ensure safe and fire incident-free communities. As part of the IFFD commemoration, the command has also organized radio sensitization on fire safety and stakeholder engagement to appreciate the contributions of firefighters. The events will conclude on May 4, 2026, with a durbar at the Western Regional Headquarters in Fijai.
IFFD is a day dedicated to honoring and celebrating the selfless and dedicated sacrifices and services of firefighters worldwide.
