Accra: The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to withdraw its previous communications regarding post-retirement contracts for senior academic members in public universities.
According to Ghana Web, the directive impacts letters dated September 30 and October 1, 2025, which addressed post-retirement engagements within the tertiary education sector. A press statement from the Ministry indicated that the decision followed a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
'The Honourable Minister for Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to immediately withdraw its letters dated September 30 and October 1, 2025, concerning the post-retirement contracts of Academic Senior Members of public universities,' the statement said. The Ministry explained that the move is aimed at allowing broader consultations before any final policy direction is taken.
The decision is pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction in this regard reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana's tertiary education sector. The Ministry further emphasized the government's commitment to a collaborative approach in handling issues within the education sector.
