Education Minister Halts GTEC Post-Retirement Contract Decisions

Accra: The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to withdraw its recent post-retirement contract letters for senior academic staff in public universities. These letters were originally issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025.

According to Ghana Web, the directive followed a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, who expressed their concerns about the potential implications of the communications. The Ministry's decision was announced through a statement released on Monday, April 27, 2026, signed by the Minister's Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed.

The Ministry emphasized that the withdrawal aims to facilitate broader stakeholder engagement before any final decisions are made. This process is intended to ensure that all policies affecting the tertiary education sector are thoroughly evaluated and that consensus is achieved.

The statement further highlighted the Ministry's commitment to a consultative and inclusive approach in resolving issues within higher education. It stated, 'The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction in this regard reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana's tertiary education sector.'
