Honduras Withdraws Recognition of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

Honduras: The Republic of Honduras has suspended its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, according to an official communication sent to Moroccan authorities.

According to Ghana News Agency, the decision was conveyed in a letter addressed to Mr. Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, by Ms. Mireya Agero de Corrales, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Honduras. In the letter, Ms. Agero de Corrales explained that the suspension was a sovereign decision by Honduras, grounded in its commitment to the principles of non-interference and respect for the internal affairs of states.

Ms. Agero de Corrales further stated that Honduras reaffirms its support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to achieve a political, just, and lasting solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2797. The Honduran government also formally notified Mr. Ant³nio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, of its decision.

Honduras, a Central American country, first recognized the SADR in 1989 and reaffirmed that position in 2022. The latest decision marks the sixth withdrawal of recognition of the entity over the past two years, reflecting growing international momentum on the Moroccan Sahara issue, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
