Accra: The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has congratulated Ing Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), on his appointment as Chair of the Engineering Education Committee of the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO) for the 2026-2029 term. The appointment follows the formal approval by the FAEO Executive Council of a proposal led under Professor Nyarko's guidance for Ghana to host the committee. According to Ghana Web, the successful endorsement through a competitive process marks a significant milestone for both the appointee and Ghana's engineering community. The Institution noted that this development places Ghana at the forefront of shaping engineering education across the African continent. 'By securing this strategic role, GhIE is positioned at the forefront of shaping engineering education across the African continent,' the statement noted. It added that hosting the Engineerin g Education Committee presents an opportunity to promote innovation in curriculum development, strengthen knowledge exchange, and advance best practices to prepare engineers for Africa's development challenges. Professor Nyarko's appointment was also described as recognition of his long-standing contribution to engineering education and practice. 'Ing. Prof. Nyarko's appointment reflects a career distinguished by impact, leadership, and relevance,' GhIE stated. With over three decades of experience in academia and professional engineering, he has worked extensively in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) engineering, influencing policy and improving service delivery in several African contexts. At KNUST, he rose through the ranks from lecturer to Provost of the College of Engineering. GhIE noted that under his leadership, he mobilised over US$25 million in research and capacity-building grants, doubled the College's endowment fund, and expanded the alumni network to more than 16,000 members. The Institutio n also highlighted his commitment to mentorship and human capital development, noting that his academic supervision and scholarly work have helped train a new generation of engineers. At the national level, Professor Nyarko serves as a Council Member of GhIE and has contributed to engineering governance and policy development. 'At a time when universities are expected to play a more decisive role in innovation, industry collaboration, and national transformation, his appointment signals confidence in a leadership model grounded in experience, vision, and measurable impact,' the statement added. GhIE expressed confidence in his leadership of the FAEO committee, stating, 'The Ghana Institution of Engineering is confident that under his leadership, the FAEO Engineering Education Committee will deliver meaningful outcomes for the continent and further strengthen Africa's engineering capacity.'
