Ada Traditional Council Dismisses Motion Challenging Ohuewem Stool Father’s Authority

Ada: The Ada Traditional Council has dismissed a motion filed by Mr. Ofotsu Amevor challenging the authority of Mr. Joshua Ofori Keku as Principal Stool Father of the Ohuewem Clan. The motion sought to contest Mr. Keku's capacity to file an earlier case for the removal of Mr. Amevor as Divisional Chief (Wetsoyi) of the Ohuewem Clan.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Judicial Committee of the Council, comprising a three-member panel chaired by Asafoatsengua Kotoko Debra V, affirmed that Mr. Keku had the requisite authority as principal stool father to install a divisional chief and to challenge the legitimacy of a title holder within the clan. The committee subsequently dismissed the application and further restrained Mr. Amevor from parading himself as the divisional chief of the Ohuewem Clan. The dispute follows the vacancy created after the demise of Nene Amoakoto IV in 2023, which necessitated the selection and installation of a new divisional chief in line with customary practices.

Sources within the clan indicate that the Gonyue and Amoako families of Kaja-Dornya and Tojeh, who are vested with the authority to nominate a successor, selected four candidates for consideration and subsequently endorsed Mr. Solomon Ofoe Gonyue. He was presented to the family head, Mr. Emmanuel Kow Hlordzi, who, after a six-member committee vetting process, approved his candidature and directed that arrangements be made for the burial of the late chief, in accordance with custom, which requires a successor to be installed to oversee the burial processes.

However, the process reportedly took a different turn when Mr. Hlordzi allegedly proceeded to install Mr. Amevor as divisional chief and presented him to the Ada Traditional Council on the same day at the late chief's funeral. Customarily, the installation of a divisional chief is performed by the principal stool father, a position held by Mr. Keku.

Subsequently, Mr. Keku filed a case at the Ada Traditional Council seeking to have Mr. Amevor removed from the council's records and replaced with Mr. Solomon Ofoe Gonyue. Mr. Amevor, through his lawyers, challenged the capacity of the stool father to initiate such action, leading to the motion which has now been dismissed by the council in a ruling delivered on April 15, 2026, at the Ada Traditional Council Hall.
