Krobo: The chiefs and people of Krobo land, which includes Yilo Krobo, Upper Manya Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, and Asuogyaman, have issued a seven-day ultimatum to Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South. They are demanding a retraction and apology for alleged ethnocentric comments directed at Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey.
According to Ghana Web, the ultimatum was prompted by a video circulating online, in which the MP allegedly made remarks deemed offensive by the Krobo community. During a press briefing, Sub-Chief of Adjepo, Nene Adamptey Iddrisu, stated that if the MP does not retract his comments and apologize within the given timeframe, the Krobo people will petition the Speaker of Parliament to take necessary action in accordance with parliamentary regulations. The directive was issued by Nene Sakite II, President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.
The chiefs also emphasized the significant contributions of Krobo indigenes to national development. They mentioned figures like Emmanuel Tettey Korboe, who influenced the growth of Koforidua, and Major (Rtd) Ted Tetteh, a former Regional Minister. They urged public officials to promote unity and peaceful coexistence, warning against divisive statements.
Meanwhile, Okyere Baafi has refuted claims of intending to demean or discriminate against any ethnic group, asserting that his comments were misunderstood and taken out of context. He insisted that his remarks were made within a specific context.
